5 Things to Consider Before Promoting Your Blog

Promoting Your Website

I’ve seen a lot of blogs doing heavy promotions but not really sustaining the temporary increase of traffic. I feel that they are wasting their time promoting something that is not worth to be promoted.

If you do a promotion, that means a temporary boost of traffic, the trick is how to convert those newcomers to your loyal readers.

1 - Content is Still King

You might have heard this many times but only because it’s worth repeating. Before you go spend money on website promotion, make sure you already have a suitable amount of good contents that will make the initial boost of readers come back for more.

Content can mean a lot of things though. But it mainly depends on what your blog is all about. If you have a humour blog, make sure you have some killer joke posts that will make the readers LOL. If you have a comics blog, make sure you have great comic strips waiting to be passed on to your reader’s friends.

2 - Make Sure Your Killer Contents are Found First

Yeah. You might have great contents, but can the readers find it? One thing you can do is include a Top Recommended Articles on your sidebar. Another alternative is to install the plugin Popularity Contest which will rank your most popular posts.

3 - Get Your Subscribe to My RSS Feed Link Noticed

If you have great contents, the readers will definitely want to come back for more. But with all the blogs they have been reading, they might not easily remember your blog’s domain name. That’s where you need to make sure they subscribe to your RSS Feeds.

Not only will that ensure a regular reader, it will also add to your blog’s credibility when you accumulate more RSS subscriber count on your Feedburner chicklet.

4 - Remove the Signs of an Ad Whore

If you want to convert visitors to loyal readers, you need to make them read your contents first. Slapping your readers a shit load of Google Adsense on the fist page of your site isn’t going to make them want to continue on to your contents.

I don’t mean removing all the ads altogether, but just making the site contents the core of your blog and not the ads.

5 - Think Long Term and Not Arbitrage

I believe that blogging is a long term investment. If you want to go do some heavy promotion with a bunch of Google Adsense plastered all over the front page, then fine by me. It may earn you several bucks but then that’s it. If you work on gaining loyal readers and eventually creating a huge reader base, you won’t even need to promote your site. They will promote it for you.

Do you have plans to promote your blog anytime soon?

Great post - good reminder for me. Not that I’m going to pay for posts, but it’s hard for my blog to retain readership :(

Thanks Stephanie. It’s not easy to keep a high readership especially if you’re only starting out. Just stand out of the pack and be consistent. I’m sure your readership will continue to improve. :D

Yup! I really do like the picture too. It’s cute and captures the essence of the post. Wouldn’t it be nice if readers out there are “lining up” and “tagging friends along” to read and be avid readers of our blogs?

This is really useful for new bloggers. I think this is the main reason why i can hit hundred or thousand of visitors when i hardly promote my blog and the visitors become around hundreds again after a few days. Maybe need to think how to let visitors know about my popular posts.

Good idea Dicky. You should serve your popular posts in a silver platter so that visitors can easily partake of them. Anyway, good job on your blog buddy. More power! :D
