Is The Asus Eee PC For You?

With the Christmas season picking up, I’ve been busy doing a lot of preparation and of course, shopping!
One item I’m looking forward to buying is an Asus Eee PC.
Fortunately, I found an Asus Eee PC at SM City Cebu just today. It was one of 10 freshly delivered units. The earlier batch sold like hotcakes. Why you say? Well, let’s get up close and personal with the product after the jump.

Major Selling Point is Portability

Just look at how small that is. You can even grip it with one hand. It’s small and it’s light. The Asus Eee PC is totally great for students and bloggers. It’s just like a notebook you can carry to the school.
But because of the 4GB size of the Hard Disk, it’s pretty clear that this is not for gaming or heavy application users. Some of the uses I see the Asus Eee PC doing is:
- Internet
- Email and Instant Messaging
- Word Documents and Spreadsheets
- eBook Reading
- Coding Purposes
- Music? (might want to use an external drive for more songs)

Final Thoughts:
The Asus Eee PC is great for students, bloggers or people always on the go. It’s very portable and handy. The price is also great. But because of the portability, the uses of the Eee PC is downgraded to simple internet surfing and basic computer uses.
It would have been better if they made the disk space bigger, at least I could add more songs or videos. In terms of the sound quality, it’s loud enough considering the size of the unit. Plus it has an earphone plug if you want crisper quality of sounds.
I hope you enjoyed the short review and pictures guys. Any plans to get an Asus Eee PC soon?

Wait did you just buy one?
I’m still waiting for a black version to pop out before I buy one (and to think I blew the budget on my tuition) or if I still can’t find one by next year I might opt for Everex’s “Cloudbook” which is expected to be out on the 15th next year. Better specs and although I hate to say it but it looks much cleaner than the EEE.
The price on that EEE is a bit over the top though, I know two shops selling it for 17K and one that sells it for 16K. Only in Manila though
Not yet Sylv. Partly because of the reasons you just mentioned. The price of the unit in the mall was a bit more expensive than other units I’ve heard of. Although I’ve yet to find cheaper ones here in Cebu.
Still on a look out for better bargains. I haven’t heard of the Cloudbook you just mentioned. I’ll try looking into that though.
I’ve seen the black one but honestly, I like the white design better. The black version looks a too common for my taste. But then again, thats just me.
Well I need to buy two, one for me (white) and one for the sponsor of the budget for the EEE (black, my dad ^^). I really wish more of the major distributors stock up EEE’s though. I’m not sure if the Asus Center nearby carries stock though but if they do, I’m pretty sure they’d have the lowest priced units.
Search the Cloudbook on Gizmodo or <i4u.
Thanks for sharing this. Tha fact that it runs under linux made me more eager to buy an Eee PC.
I can see you’re more of an open source kind of guy, Derek. Hehe. It runs linux but we can always install Microsoft XP for those that prefer windows.
Working on Linux, Apple or Micro is close to the same if you’re just using the browser for online work. I see little reason to choose Windows over the default of Linux.
This is the perfect ‘problogger’ companion tool in my eyes. Reading this review has only reinvigorated my desire to purchase one of these bad boys.
Ok. That laptop definitely rocks. It’s very ideal for the everyday things we do, blogging, blogging, blogging and have I mentioned blogging?
Seriously, it’s a nice find McBilly but they should have made the hard disk capacity a little larger.
Hahaha. You forgot to mention blogging, Teejay.
The hard disk is really the main issue here. My brother even complained that his iPod has a bigger disk space than the Eee PC.
But then again, the price is really affordable. And of course, the Eee PC is most ideal only for students and for blogging purposes. Hehe.
Asus! Nice find brother and nice model too. lols
Thanks Ambo. The Asus Eee PC is indeed a good catch. You can even pass it off as a mac especially if you put a big apple sticker on the front logo. Haha.
[...] back home than through web-cam chatting. Traveling requires light packing. McBilly.com recommends a very light and affordable e-gadget for the travelers who can’t live without their laptop [...]
That’s an awesome computer that would be great for conferences or for travel. I’m sure they don’t offer anything like that in the US. Asia seems to be light-years ahead in terms of computer electronics. Maybe you can send one my way.
I’m pretty sure they have stocks of Asus Eee PC there in the US. But you might have a hard time finding one because of the high demand and low supplies.
Hmm. Send one Eee PC your way? Care to trade it for some of those reviews your giving away? Haha.
im planning to buy one too.. but i just bought a smartphone.. ill try to squeezzzzzzzzzzzze my budget nyahhaha
[...] to bring my laptop so that I can update my blog regularly. Although it could be easier if I had an Asus Eee PC. [...]
I read that they’ll be releasing 10-inch with 8GB HD this year but its expensive worth $499.
What you read is indeed true donalyza. But with that expensive price tag, I don’t think it would click.
The main reason people are flocking stores to get an Asus Eee PC is because of its portability and cheap price. Hehe. I don’t know what Asus was thinking.
I thought Asus killed that rumor stating that there won’t be a 10″ version? Anyway, Asus is really hitting everyone’s sweet spot. Who needs a snazzy phone when you can get a fully working laptop for the same if not the same price?
All eyes are on Asus now and everyone’s cramming for a piece of the market. Here’s an interesting post on why every other company hates Asus: Article here.
Yeah. I’ve seen that article at Digg. Asus has really done a great job with the Eee PC, considering it’s a whole lot cheaper than the iPhone!
Have you seen any in display lately Sylv? Is the Eee PC really out of stocks there at Manila?
Yep, they disappeared and sold like hotcakes but I’m not going to spoil myself and buy one any time soon. I lack the money plus my PSP needs some attention..
New (bigger) battery, new casing, new buttons, new memory. I feel like I’ve bought a car haha.
Haha. A newly customized badass PSP? Sounds like hours and hours of fun and time consumption!
Have fun keeping yourself busy with your PSP. The new PSP Slim and Lite looks pretty cool by the way!
Yeah theres so much to play that I usually can’t decide which. Then there’s the Wii too. Once I play that thing… it’s addicting!
Where can I buy this laptop in Manila? Can u please name some shops please? I wanna buy it ASAP!
I’m pretty sure you can find them in computer shops located in SM or Greenbelt. Try Thinking Tools or PC Quick Buys. Hope you find one right away!
I recommend shops at Gilmore. I saw several stocks there while looking for a video card. Better hurry if you’re buying a black one, they disappear FAST!
Mac did you already buy one? I heard in the news its out of stock! huh! I saw the black version of this, but the white is better. Like you’ve said, Mac sticker lang katapat nyan! lols. Think i need to buy one. I want this!
I almost bought one bro. But I’m planning to get one after I finish the Sinulog Website. It’s really really cool and very useful too, especially for us bloggers. Hehe.
I’m not sure about the out of stock news. Maybe that’s the reason William is finding it hard to get one of these baby. It might be out of stock in Manila but I’ve seen several stocks on display here in Cebu. Both black and white!
the problem with asus is the os.. most computer here are windows.. i want to avail theprepaid smart has to offer but i cant because it has to be xp,mac or vista.. linux is no longer used.. i felt bad bbuying this unit in the states.. i bought it for like 299 dollaars.. but if u want it to be xp.. you have to pay like 5,000 pesos for that,, this is good only for wireless.. no dialup at al.. gee i should have save money and buy other computer..
Aii. I want one, but the baby pink one.
But my mom won’t allow me because it’s too small. Hehe. Not suitable for a near sighted lady like me.
