Friendster Launches Own Platform for Developers

Friendster Apps

Friendster has launched their own platform for developers with a big Friendster Apps advertisement splattered across the main members page. And they call it Friendster Widgets. Sounds familiar? It should. Every other social media website is doing it.

The documentation page tells you all you need to know to get started on making your own Friendster Widget.

Friendster Apps Program Flow

I think it’s great that friendster is doing something to improve on their current features. But the big question still remains to be unseen.

Will Friendster Apps Click?

I think it could cater to some local developers hoping to make a name for themselves. And it could be a good addition to your resume especially when you’re applying for a local job as a developer or web programmer. But other than that, I really don’t see this taking off.

What do you think? Can you really see this thing click?

Hmm.. I think the question is will Friendster catch up to Facebook apps. Facebook has tons of applications (widgets for the misnomer) can be useful and a good time waster. I wonder how this will go with Filipino developers.

One thing is for sure though, if you can create an interesting app for Friendster, Facebook or even meebo (I’m currently looking into this but I still suck at web apps), you’re bound to get lots of traffic.

That is very true. It could also serve as linkbait. Kind of like how free wordpress themes are being used. How long since you started looking into web apps. I’ve been studying Facebook’s API and I’m still kind of lost. What tools do you use anyway?

I just started a month ago. The Meebo platform uses Javascript (God how I hate using js) and Actionscript (Flash). I’m still quite lost too since developing web apps branches quite differently from my current programming path which is client-based applications.

I see. I’ve also been digging deep with javascript, jQuery to be exact. It’s actually pretty cool. Hope to see some of your sample web apps. Haha.

Does anyone even use Friendster anymore? Most people I know have switched over to Facebook.

Yes. You still have Friendster users. Even here in the US, the Filipinos still prefer to US Friendster than Myspace or Facebook.
